Wheels MCC - Track day
[Report and pics by Garrett]
When you just thought you could not have as much fun doing the WHEELS "Skills Test" and "Advanced Riding" course, along came the "Track day" whereby you could practice everything you’ve been taught ... and onKillarney race track!!!! ... at a mere R100!!!!
Guys and Ladies from Wheels ... thank you, thank you, thank you ...this is what most bikers would love to be doing every other day ...
For those of you that were not there, whether supporting or participating, you missed out on a fun afternoon! Approximately about 25 bikers rocked up at 1pm eagerly waiting to get onto the track, which happened at about 2pm. An instructor took out 3 riders at a time and after having shown them the right lines to follow for three laps, came in to collect the next three riders while the others remained on the track. This session lasted for about 20 minutes.
With so many bikers with different size bikes varying from Vuca’s to 1100’s, the group was split up into two, with the "experienced guys" going out first and then the "not so experienced guys" going out next.
I must admit that being out there on the track for twenty minutes a session (and doing sessions right up until 5pm), really does put your body through its paces. I'm sure every biker on Monday must have felt as if they did the Argus cycle tour the previous day! I never knew I had muscles in certain places.
The day overall was good with no rider coming off his bike and besides minor incidents, such as a puncture happening, fun was had by all. There was even a session for the rider to take a pillion with onto the track just to get a feel for the track and it must have been fun because one rider did not even notice that he ran out of petrol and had to be fuelled up by the safety car on the track.
There were three marshalls who were constantly helping the guys with their lines, how to accelerate out of a bend and cornering into it. This helped all of us and to the end of the day some of the guys were even putting their knee down for the first time ever! Hey Nazeem and Byron (could not wipe the smile off their faces!). Thanks guys for all your input and patience especially after Saturday being Nationals. Oh, and it's kind of embarrassing when you're trying your hardest to throw your bike down and one of you guys are doing the same thing and looking back at us ...
Many of the guys were already asking when is the next one! But before any of you do the track day, please make sure that you do the Safety campaign. There is a lot of useful information taught to you which we, as everyday bikers take for granted. I would encourage every biker to do the courses...
Safe riding ...
