[More on this during the update]

Okay ... so there's no update on the Squarrows website as promised today. Having my 3G aerial installed, coz here is fokkol signal at my house. SO ... no internet connection.

You'll all have to wait until tomorrow (Tuesday 3rd August) for the update.

Until then ... behave!!!

Date: 18 July 2010

Welcome ... again ... to SQUARROWS!

Hey all you people. Nice surprize, hey! I guess you never thought you're gonna be hearing from me today. Hope you are all doing well, and keeping warm. Jissus! Maar dis fokken koud! [English translation: Gee Whizz!! It art very VERY cold!]
Before I start with anything ... you're probably wondering WTF is this thingy here on the right. Well ... believe it or not, I've been doing little things in the background to improve the SQUARROWS website. This gadget is a live TWITTER feed for the Squarrows website. A little something that allows me to post info from my cell phone directly to the Squarrows website. A constant live feed. The idea behind this is for anything that needs to be broadcasted fairly quickly for everyone to see without me having to update files on the website, coz you know how long that takes.

Lots has happened since I last updated the Squarrows site. Here's a quick update:
  • Wesley and Crystal's wedding. Congratulations to Mr. & Mrs Naidoo!
  • Crystal getting colours (YAY!!!) and winning Ms. Swallows 2010!
  • Nats and I sold the house!
  • We bought a new place, but couldn't move in for a while. Lived out of boxes in my Mom's living room (Dankie MA!).
  • Moved in twice into the new house! YAY!!!! [House Party still coming up]
  • A MOERSE THANK YOU TO ALL THE PEOPLE THAT HELPED US MOVE. We really appreciate it! Dankie!
  • Also: Congrats to Supie & Zoë who now reside up North. Lekka man! Now the Kraaifontein Cowboy has someone closer to influence.
  • ET ... gone.
  • The WORLD CUP ... yorrr ... how lekka was that! [More to follow ...]
So ... now that I'm (90%) settled, you should expect an update every second week (touch wood). Some major changes to the Squarrows website are in progress, so that I can deliver a quality website to all of you.

One of my "pains in the gat" is the gallery. Finally ... there's a solution. Have a look at the galleries ... hope you like! You are now able to view the image in a new window, and view the gallery Full Screen. Try it ...

Now that the apologies and sales pitch is out of the way ... let's get this bitch updated!!!

Updates ...

Here's a list of updates ... just in case you're thinking that nothing has changed ...
  • Follow us on FACEBOOK and TWITTER links added to the SQUARROWS website
  • New photo gallery implementation (Check the gallery ... only the newer photos uses the new gallery)
  • Events gallery updated
  • Bid or Buy links added. I've purchased a couple of things from bidorbuy ... and it's been quick and easy ... and a whole lot cheaper.
  • Squarrows Members updated
  • Squarrows Bikes updated (I'm a GOTS NOT)
  • TWITTER live feed added to Squarrowswebsite. Now you can see what we up to ... when we're doing it!
More to come in the next update!
Schweet!

The IRON PIGS SOUP KITCHEN

SQUARROWS support the IRON PIGS Soup KitchenOur friends, the IRON PIGS have been doing soup kitchens for many MANY years, and year-in ... year-out, when the cold Cape Town winter hits, the IRON PIGS crew and friends (usual suspects) are making very-lekka-moerse pots of soup to feed +/-1000 kids and adults every second Saturday of the month. (Last one was Saturday past: next one will be on the 31st July 2010). If you want to change peoples' lives, and help the less fortunate ... get involved.
Simple donations of soup ingredients are required, and if you wanna be more hands on and peel a couple of carrots and potatoes, please make contact with any of the IRON PIGS or give Gary a call @ 0836101727.

Here's some pictures of the IRON PIGS Soup Kitchen.

Marvy ... is a "gots not"
  • Date: 17 July 2010

A very sad day today ... got woken up to a phone call from Gert (from the courier company Bike Extreme) to collect my bike. As I said ... a very sad day. But what impressed me with Gert and ... (I forget his name), they drove thru the night from Jo'burg (left Friday afternoon sometime), collected a couple of bikes on their way, and rocked up at my place in high spirits (no ... they were sober) ... loaded my bike, and left back to Jo'burg. Hopefully ... I'm gonna see them in the week :) More on this to follow.

Here's some pics of Bike Extreme doing another collection.

WORLD CUP 2010

SQUARROWS and the WORLD CUP 2010
WORLD CUP 2010

Ayoba!!!!!!!!!!!

Did you feel it? It was here!!! So ... how freaking awesome was this event!!! In our own backyard!!! Yissus! We've all been waiting literally for years to finally host possibly the best SOCCER WORLD CUP EVA!
A couple of the SQUARROWS decided to experience this by doing the whole train ride and what what! Okay ... so we didn't make it into the fan park, but the whole vibe in Cape Town was most amazing. It gave you that warm feeling (not because of the brandy and rum only) to be Souf Afriken!!

Here's some WORLD CUP pics!
P.S. Thank you Dr. Poole for all the MMS pics :)

Feel good story

Where are the real heroes?

April 5, 2010

By Zane Henry

To paraphrase eminent philosopher Bonnie Tyler, we need a hero. The weight of the modern world and awful terms like global recession, climate change and Julius Malema grind us down until it's easy to believe there's little good left in the world and nobody to safeguard it.

e.tv runs frequent festivals trumpeting the exploits of 1980s square-jaws like Jean-Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren. Reality TV is trying to manufacture heroes with shows like Manhunt and Way of the Warrior. The movies throw up ever-increasing numbers of gravelly voiced superheroes consumed by moral ambivalence.

Almost all of the heroes presented to us are fake constructs designed to lull us with action set-pieces, product placements and expensive merchandise.

"Where are the real heroes?" I hear you ask.

"In Woolworths," I answer.

I was shopping at Cavendish Square on Sunday. Well, watching my wife shop, as I was dragged from outlet to outlet for my opinion on over-priced clothing.

I escaped downstairs, claiming I was going to look at the men's section. I really just wanted to browse the celeb magazines. (Did you know that Lady Gaga was a Satanist and high-ranking member of the Illuminati?)

I took the escalator down and turned the corner towards the magazine section when I heard shouts. I turned around to see a little boy of about five dangling from the railing on the upper floor.

A guy in his late 30s or early 40s was walking by. He was dressed casually and had a tiny plaster on his right temple.

He looked up, walked forwards, his head craned all the time and held out his arms. The boy dangled for a few more seconds and then fell. He looked like a papier-mâché mannequin flung into the air. A woman screamed as my insides turned to strawberry-flavoured frozen yoghurt.

The boy landed in the guy's arms with his head pointing down towards the hard, shiny tiles. The guy's knees bent slightly to cushion the weight. He held the boy for about 10 seconds, put him back on his feet, bent down to check that he was OK, lowered his head and walked away, oblivious to the hand-clapping and back-slapping.

As he walked past me, I put my hand on his shoulder and said, "Good catch."

He looked at me with wide eyes and a tiny smile and said, "Shot", then walked away without anybody catching his name.

My wife came out of the changing room to find me grinning. She held up two identical skirts and asked which one I liked best. I looked at her and said: "They're both good. Baby, everything is good."

final words ...

So ... thank you one and all for your contributions to www.squarrows.co.za ... much appreciated. REMEMBER: any events or functions, please send them thru. Anything you feel is appropriate for the Squarrows site ... pass it on. Check in again in 2 weeks time (unless there's a rally) again for an update ... and if you haven't subscribed ... do so now.
